What’s in a Name? A Guide to Differentiating KEF Architectural Speakers

With so many KEF Architectural speaker models available, it can be challenging to navigate the options. Whether you’re building a home theater, setting up a sleek stereo system, or creating a multi-room music experience, this guide will help you understand KEF’s naming conventions and make the right choices.

Decoding the KEF Architectural speaker naming convention:

“Ci” = Custom Installation
All current KEF in-wall and in-ceiling speaker models begin with “Ci”. If a product name doesn’t start with “Ci,” it may be a wall-mounted speaker instead.

Driver Size (Number)
The number following “Ci” represents the driver diameter in millimeters. A larger driver typically means higher output and a wider frequency range. In most cases, this refers to the width of the Uni-Q driver array, though in some models it may be based on the cutout size. A four-digit number indicates the number of drivers first, then the size. A Ci5160REFM-THX for instance is a speaker with five 160mm drivers.

Series (Letter)
The next letter indicates the series, which reflects performance and build quality. As you move up the series, materials, engineering, and sound performance improve.

The series go from good to best in this order E, C, Q, R, REF
Models with a T here are Extremely Low Profile (shallow depth for tight spaces).
Shape (Letter)
The following letter denotes shape:

S = Square
R = Round
L = Rectangular
Round models are most common for in-ceiling installations, but you’re not restricted to using round speakers if you prefer another shape. Importantly, shape does not affect performance. A Ci200QR and a Ci200QS, for instance have identical specs.
Larger rectangular speakers are recommended for use in walls only due to their weight.

Metamaterial Absorption Technology (M)
Some models include “M” after the shape, signifying they use KEF’s advanced MAT technology for reduced distortion.

Special Application

In addition to the standard naming, some models carry extra letters to indicate special features:
b = Architectural subwoofer
Subwoofers will cover the lowest frequencies in the audible range. All current KEF architectural subwoofer models are passive, meaning they will require an amplifier to power them. The KASA500 subwoofer amplifier is recommended for use with all our architectural subwoofer models.
fl = Flush mount (for ultra-low profile installs)
In areas where an extremely low-profile model works best aesthetically, you can use a flush mount model.
ds = Dual stereo (a single speaker that reproduces both stereo channels, ideal for small rooms)
In smaller spaces where you prefer a stereo set up but there is only space for a single speaker, you can use a dual stereo model.
THX = Certified for THX home theater standards
While most architectural models are perfectly suited for use in a home theater system, we do offer specific models that have THX designations. Look specifically at each product page to determine if the speaker you are interested in has a THX certification that will cover your listening area. THX certification doesn’t mean you can’t use these models for music listening!

Examples of Model Names
Ci200QR → 200mm driver, Q Series, round shape
Ci4100QL-THX → Four 100mm drivers, Q Series, rectangular, THX certified
Ci160CRds → 160mm driver, C Series, round, dual stereo
Ci130QSfl → 130mm driver, Q Series, square, flush mount

Choosing the Right Models

There is no difference between a great speaker for stereo music and one for home theatre. A well-engineered speaker performs well regardless of the content. KEF designs all architectural speakers to be timbre-matched, giving you flexibility when mixing models across your setup.

Multi-Room Music
Use higher series models in the rooms where you’ll do the most critical listening.
For secondary spaces, stepping down a series won’t disrupt the overall flow of music throughout the home.

Home Theater
Prioritize your front speakers, this is where better models will have the most impact.
Match your surrounds and Atmos channels to the same series where possible.
If budget requires compromise, step down one series for the surrounds while keeping fronts high-quality.

Don’t forget to budget for subwoofers!
